I'm not sure about this, and I don't have this one on tape to re-watch and find out, but... I think that after the guy that shot Nick, when he was talking to Schanke, he said something like "That cops dead. I shot him." and Schanke says something like "Well, thanks for the confession" and then he says "Do you think we're all stupid?" and shows the guy that he is wearing a bullet proof vest. Then the guy says "Oh, it didn't look like that. It looked like it was just him." I think Schanke thought he did shoot Nick, but he thought Nick was wearing a police vest.

Anyway, that's what I thought happened. Still I completely agree with you about Schanke being clueless when the hunter starts talking about stuffing the bullets with garlic and all that stuff. They didn't even show that as a flashback in "Close Call". That would have been a perfect flashback! Oh well.

I thought that maybe Schanke didn't pay much attention to the hunter when she was talking about garlic and so on because he just thought she was crazy. Or possibly he thought she had found out about Nick's "allergy to daylight" and just thought that Nick was a vampire. This took me quite a long while of thinking to come up with and I still think its a little far fetched.
