Close Call

Comment on your critique of "Close Call" in particular: I can't help but think that you missed a few facets of LaCroix's very complex personality. Although initially surprising, I thought his actions at the end of the episode meshed perfectly with the other hints of his character we have seen scattered thruout the series. Important to remember: LaCroix is very old, and not human. He makes no pretense to humanity. However, being inhuman doesn't mean you have to be a complete bastard... And, in his way, he cares a great deal about Nick; that he has demonstrated time and again. It is obvious he thinks that Nick will only hurt himself in the long run by rejecting his vampire nature and dabbling in humanity, which is why he keeps trying to "teach" Nick to accept that he is a vampire, not a mortal. I think that in this episode, he realized that Nick needs his relationship with Schanke, and acted to stabilize it.

The relationship between LaCroix and Nick seems to have changed in some critical ways as a result of Nick trying to kill LaCroix in the pilot, and after "Father's Day". LaCroix seems to have figured out that he was only driving Nick further away by agressively interfering in Nick's "life", and he is more subtle these days...

Excellent! Perfect! This was one of the best I have ever seen. Schanke's conclusion that Nick wasn't a vamppire seemed to me more or less realistic; after all, he doesn't exactly relate to supernatural phenomena. But all this episode was composed of was Schanke recalling and making flashbacks. I think that was one of the few setbacks.

You are so right when it comes to the strange logic Schanke uses to connect LaCroix to the Nightcrawler when he finds that photo in Nick's desk. Considering Nick's attitude toward LaCroix, I found it difficult to believe he'd have that photo in the first place.

However, I never had a problem with the old driver's license in the glove compartment. My husband and I found several years worth of auto registrations and insurance info when we cleaned out our first car and sold it. Some of the paperwork was even from the time my father-in-law owned the vehicle. I suspect a lot of people just put things in the glove box and forget about them. True, most folks aren't trying to lead a secret life, but I'll bet that's what happened in Nick's case. There are at least 3 photographic items in Nick's loft which connect him to previous lives:

  1. 1953 - 1/2 a photo of Nick and friends from England from "Forward Into the Past" (as Nicholas Hammond).
  2. 1954 - Newspaper photo on computer disc of Nick being blacklisted from "Spin Doctor" (as Associate Professor Nicholas Girard).
  3. 1966 - A framed photograph of Nick and the Toffler family from "1966" (as Nick Thomas).

You're right, it seemed a little odd that Nick would choose to fly in front of Schanke instead of shooting at the perp, but perhaps he was running on instinct. After all, he's been a vampire a lot longer than he has a cop.
