Nick joins the Luminology cult to investigate the death of a city official's son. When he inexplicably breaks off contact with the department, however, Natalie infiltrates Luminology's headquarters and discovers that Nick has been brainwashed.
This was a pretty mediocre episode. Too many of the scenes seemed to be making points that had already been made in previous scenes.
Also, I couldn't bring myself to believe in this "Luminology" cult. The cult lived in a small building, never going out into the light of the sun -- even though the sun was their basic icon? Sure, it's merely a symbol, but I would think that the source of that symbol would still be considered special. The structure of the cult was also strange; sort of a loose conglomerate held together by one man. How did things like kitchen chores actually get done, since there didn't seem to be anyone giving those sorts of orders?
The first time I saw this episode it completely baffled me. Nick seemed to be a convert to this Luminology cult, completely immersed. Even when he gets the chance to talk to Schanke alone in the kitchen, Nick doesn't let on that he's faking it. Instead he freaks Schanke out (no small task).
On a second viewing, I noticed that Nick wasn't taking an active part in the cult. Unless he was forced into the center of attention, he was usually standing in the background, almost as an observer. And perhaps he knew that he was being watched, and was just being extra cautious. But still... was he just being really cautious? At the risk of alienating his friends?
I liked the scene where Natalie becomes so worried that she confronts Janette, asking if Nick were particularly "vulnerable". It's a great exchange; Janette clearly knows that there's some feelings between Natalie and Nick, so she's acting really catty, while Natalie is torn between her fear of being in a nest of vampires and her need for information.
Still, I have to wonder how Natalie managed to fake being an emotional wreck so easily. I don't recall her ever doing much acting before, and certainly not so well -- you'd think a lonely pathologist wouldn't have much practice acting.
