CHEIRY, Switzerland (AP) --

Forty-eight members of a religious sect were found dead in a concealed underground chapel and other buildings after apparently committing mass suicide. Some victims wore ceremonial robes, their hands clasped in prayer and plastic bags tied over their heads.

Police found the bodies in the burning ruins of a farm and three ski chalets in southern Switzerland. The deaths were apparently a mass suicide by a religious sect called the Cross and Rose, which an expert on cults described as an occult group "with strong apocalyptical elements."
