SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuter) --
Chilean policemen stopped 49 motorists for using cellular telephones while driving, only to discover that a third were pretending to talk on fake phones, reported newspaper La Tercera Monday.
The two policemen discovered 30 percent of motorists stopped were using plastic and wood phones while they were carrying out traffic checks in Santiago's wealthy eastern suburbs.
"I was only doing it to look better," the paper quoted one driver as telling the police.
Another said in Chile you have to "show off" to get ahead, and using a fake phone was much cheaper than the real thing.
It was not clear if the penalties for using a mock phone while driving was the same as for a real one.
Cellular phones are among the ultimate status symbols among image conscious consumers in Chile, which has one of Latin America's most successful economies.
