TAMPA, Florida (Reuter) --
A Florida couple with eight children are due to appear in court this month on charges of incest after it was discovered they were brother and sister, local authorities said Monday.
Identified as Deborah and William M. to protect their offspring, the couple have lived as husband and wife for more than 20 years.
Their case came to police attention earlier this year when they checked out a report that William, 64, was molesting one of their children. His wife is 20 years younger.
Florida's Health and Rehabilitation Service rejected that charge but discovered that the couple were siblings and had produced eight children, aged from one to 19 years old. Social workers asked the court to let the children stay with their mother if she had no contact with her brother. The authorities said all but one of the children had emotional problems and scored well below average on intelligence tests.
William told investigators a close relationship began with his sister about 23 years ago when he asked her to join him in finding God. He said the Book of Leviticus in the bible told him to find a wife from his own family and that he was chosen to usher in an era of peace that would start in the year 2000.
A hearing has been set for Oct. 30.
